Bangladesh Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (BAPMR) was officially formed during 1995 by a small group of enthusiastic Physiatrists of Bangladesh. It is a nonpolitical and non profitable organization aimed at professional development of the specialty and to implement these developments in the Health care delivery system of Bangladesh especially in the Rehabilitation sector. Since its inception, we are working hard for the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of disabilities resulting from diseases and trauma through a standard approach at the local and national level.

BAPMR have at present 25 Physiatrists in a country with 1400, 000, 00 populations. We are trying to organize continuing medical education programs highlighting the main topics of the day to day practice problems. BAPMR has arranged three national conferences so far. All these conferences are highly participating at local and international level. Younger physicians are getting more interested on the specialty. Some of physiatrists are attending international Rehabilitation conferences with a view to exchange of knowledge among the rehabilitation experts.

We are running Fellowship (FCPS) and Doctor of Medicine (MD) courses at present parallel to other main specialties of the country. We could not send physiatrist to all Medical Colleges yet and hence to raise the number of Physiatrists, very recently Diploma in Rehab Medicine (like Diploma in Medical Rehabilitation in UK) course is proposed and it is under process to cover the district hospitals. Rehabilitation here is mainly dealing musculoskeletal diseases and we are trying to organizing

  1. Neuro Rehab Unit
  2. Musculoskeletal – Rehab Unit
  3. Sports Medicine Unit
  4. Spinal rehab Unit in the University Hospital

Bangladesh Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (BAPM) is sincerely working to standardize and unify the Rehabilitation practice throughout the country. Our Physiatrists are sincere about the scientific works even. Numbers of Scientific papers have been published in the local and international Journals and the executive committee of the BAPMR is actively trying to publish a Rehabilitation Medicine Journal here.

During the last BAPMR conference (held in October 2004) the Hon’ble Health Minister has kindly committed to set a National Rehabilitation Institute, where intensive rehabilitation of the disabilities could be done covering all sub- specialties with the development of the auxiliary staff e.g. Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy, prosthetics and orthotics along with rehab nursing will.

BAPMR is a proud National Society Member of International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM) since 1999 and committed to maintain the membership in the coming days. Our representative routinely attends the ISPRM World Congresses. We need to train up and expose our young energetic colleagues at the international level. In this perspective a dynamic continuing support from ISPRM is very much anticipated.
