Disaster Rehabilitation Committee (DRC)

This page provides an overview of the ISPRM Disaster Rehabilitation Committee (DRC), an ISPRM committee which also collaborates with the WHO Liaison Committee on WHO disaster-related disability initiatives.

Background
Large-scale disasters result in significant mortality and disability due to the high incidence of traumatic disabling injuries. Health systems of the affected region generally lack rehabilitation infrastructure and are disrupted or destroyed. Moreover, rehabilitation perspective is lacking in relief efforts during the disaster response such that the rehabilitation needs of the newly injured and those with pre-existing disabilities are largely neglected.  Return to normal physical function and full, satisfying lives is therefore limited and community recovery impaired.

Mission
To provide technical resources for optimizing the health, functioning and quality of life of persons who sustain injuries or impairments due to a large-scale disaster.

Agenda
Strategic objectives of the DRC (as of the ISPRM 2013 CRDR committee session) include:

  • Providing technical education and other online resources on professional humanitarian rehabilitation response
  • Facilitating post-disaster rehabilitation response by ISPRM members
  • Hosting symposia on disaster rehabilitation ad convening committee sessions at annual ISPRM congresses
  • Conducting disaster rehabilitation research
  • Writing peer-reviewed discussion and scientific papers on disaster rehabilitation
  • Hosting symposia on disaster rehabilitation ad convening committee sessions at annual ISPRM congresses
  • Providing expert opinion on disaster rehabilitation to WHO and other stakeholder organizations
  • Mobilizing financial resources to support emergency disaster rehabilitation response
